Photoshop: How Can It Help You?

By Ruth Smith

For years, Photoshop has been the "go to" program you can use to alter photographs or create images of your own, seamlessly. This powerhouse program has changed the way people make their own images, unleashing creativity with various tools like "paint" drop shadow functions, and more.

That's what Photoshop could -- and still can -- do, but today's Photoshop has gone even more high-tech. That is, there's a new printing method out there called "photos on canvas" and Photoshop has made this easy to do for even the average consumer. Photography has always been fun to play with on Photoshop, but now, instead of just taking photos and changing them by removing "red eye" improving the lighting, or adding neat features, we can actually take them out of the photo album and put them on canvas.

What's so special about canvas prints? Canvas prints make photos fresh and new, and make them into art instead of just plain old, same old pictures set on the tabletop or tucked away in a dusty photo album. In other words, photos can become canvas art you can hang on your walls -- but instead of having the expense of having them professionally painted, it's really easy to take photographs and convert them to canvas prints. Take favourite photographs, and do something fresh and new besides the traditional "picture collages" design. You can instead use them to decorate your walls as fine art -- canvas art, that is.

What's made this so special is that Photoshop can take the very high-resolution photographs produced by digital photography; high-resolution photos are rich and vivid, and this translates in excellent fashion to canvas. Imagine giving that perfect birthday gift or Christmas gift in the form of a canvas print made of that special occasion picture that's unique and one-of-a-kind.

Other things you can do with the new Photoshop

Once you get over the awe of the canvas capabilities Photoshop can give you, there are also other ways to use unique pictures, again brought to you by Photoshop. The same high-resolution digital photography that has made those prints possible with Photoshop can be transferred to make a personalised calendar with -- you guessed it -- your own high-resolution photographs. Photoshop can help you do this, too.

Some things to keep in mind

Before you try to transfer photographs to prints (or use them for a personalised calendar), make sure the photographs have been prepared so that they're suitable printing. They'll usually be cropped, and the colour of the photo will be enhanced if necessary. And you are ready!
